This neighborhood one of my favorites is located in the 13th rione of Rome, on the west bank of the Tiber river, just south of Vatican City. The name derives from the Latin, trans Tiberim, meaning “beyond the Tiber”.
Today the neighborhood maintains an old world charm thanks to its small medieval structures and narrow streets. It has become a magnet neighborhood for the young and trendy due to many places to eat and drink. There are some very good restaurants and I tried to eat my way through this neighborhood and failed miserably. Some of my favorite places in this neighborhood include
Osteria La Gensola – A bit further from the center of Trestevere this restaurant known for its seafood offers a wide variety of typical Roman fare. One of my favorite dishes Strapazzata (What’s not to like about fried spinach, fried potatoes, tomatoes, bacon and a scrambled egg) is particularly good.
Osteria Le Mani in Pasta – Recommended to us by native Romans this Osteria serves excellent fish and has a wonderful wine list. I would strongly suggest a reservation as every time we visited it was packed and we saw many visitors turned away.
Da Gildo Trattoria – Located just west of the Ponte Sisto this family owned Trattoria serves very good typical Roman Food. We often took out of town guests to eat here. I recommend their pizzas.
